What is Imago Relationship Therapy?

Imago Relationship Therapy was developed by Harville Hunt Ph.D and Helen LaKelly Hunt Ph.D in the late 1970’s and into the 1980’s and is based on one simple question, “Why do couples have such a hard time staying together?”

This form of therapy uses specific and structured dialogue to help couples transform conflict into opportunities for growth and mutual understanding.

The dialogues are based on the foundational Imago principal that unresolved childhood hurts or trauma influence adult relationships, and as adults we choose partners who reflect these early feelings of hurt, as well as our childhood understanding of love.

The dialogues can help couples reduce reactivity, lower anger responses, increase empathy, create emotional safety and allow for deeper connection.
